stoneage superathletes

BOLE is a sport that tests your dexterity and running ability. The sport was first played by the Tarahumara, a group of Native Americans famed for incredible feats of endurance. Our mission is to create a running ball with the same characteristics as the balls used by the Tarahumara. We pride ourselves on crafting running balls that have excellent performance, superb style, and product integrity. Now everybody can experience the sport of stoneage superathletes.

The Tarahumara

Arguably the best long distance marathoners in the world, the Tarahumara are no joke when it comes to running. Physiologist Dr. Dale Groom concluded, "that not since the days of the ancient Spartans has a people achieved such a high state of physical conditioning." Historically they were persistence hunters, ran long-distances between villages to communicate, and ran for sport. It was not unusual for the Tarahumara people to go beastmode and run up to 200 miles in one session. They call themselves the Raramuri, or “Running People”, and they call their running sport rarajipari.

The Game

We call rarajipari BOLE (bōlē) because it's easier to pronounce and plays off of the spanish word "bola," which means ball. BOLE is played by choosing two or more teams of equal size. Each team must pass their running ball over a mutually agreed course and distance. The first team to cross the finish line with their team's ball wins! The winner is usually the team with the best endurance, foot skills, and strategy. We love playing BOLE for these reasons:
  • Running is now a teamsport, and playing with others is fun!
  • Strategy, foot skills, and competition make running more interesting.
  • It's easier to train when you're focused on a running ball
  • BOLE helps to bring runners into the moment.

Performance

Bole balls are completely solid and made from maple wood. Maple is the perfect combination of shock resistance, durability, and density that you won't find in other balls. BOLE balls are engineered to behave exactly like the running balls used by the Tarahumara. By researching the effects of ball density and size on the performance of the ball, we have created running balls that have the same kick trajectory and roll pattern as Tarahumara balls.

Design

We wanted to create a running ball that looks as great as it performs. Meticulous craftsmanship has gone into every aspect of the ball. Every BOLE ball has a logo that shows off the natural color of the maple wood. The rest of the BOLE ball is hand brushed with a blue, red, or yellow dye. The dye penetrates the ball in such a way that the grain of the maple wood is still visible. This effect creates a stunning aesthetic unique to BOLE balls. Then every BOLE ball is individually hand sealed with a protective, semi-gloss finish. The finish accentuates both the color of the dye and the characteristics of the maple.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

a photo of Andrew Gait

"Want to exercise better, train harder and have fun? Play more BOLE! I get out with my ball at least four times a week, and wouldn't change that for the world."

Andrew Gait, long-distance runner

a photo of Jack Samfrey

"I was a little nervous about the longevity of the ball when I first made my purchase. I tend to have a rugged attitude when it comes to sports. The ball has performed well and beyond its expectations however."

Jack Samfrey, high school cross country coach

"I love my BOLE ball. The other kids at school thought it looked so much fun they started playing with me"

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What materials are used for a BOLE ball?

BOLE balls are made with maple wood. Maple has the perfect combination of shock resistance, durability, and density that you can't find in any other ball material. As a testament to its strength, maple is the same durable material used in bowling alley floors. The balls are dyed rather than painted to retain the visible wood grain. BOLE uses aniline dye, which is an eco-friendly, non-toxic, and high quality wood stain. Every ball is sealed with spar urethane. Spar urethane is a protective semi-gloss finish that protects the ball from UV light, water, and hard terrain.

How long will my BOLE ball last?

Over time it is normal for all BOLE balls to collect their share of battle scars, but we promise that your BOLE ball will never break or be unusable. If by some freak chance your ball does break, we will exchange a brand new BOLE ball for your broken ball, free of charge. So in summary, your ball will last forever. If it breaks, let us know, and like a phoenix a new BOLE ball will rise from the ashes. To learn more about the exchange policy go here.
